Momentary outages do the damage, not lightning strikes

A direct strike is rare and unmistakable. What happens constantly during a Northeast Florida summer is far less dramatic: the power drops for a fraction of a second and comes straight back, or it sags to a lower voltage for a few seconds while the grid recovers. Clocks blink. Nobody thinks about it again.

Modern built-ins do not enjoy that. A control board is a small computer with a power supply, non-volatile memory and a set of relays. Interrupting it mid-write can corrupt what it has stored. Dropping voltage while a motor or an element is under load stresses the switching components on the board. Neither leaves a scorch mark, so the appliance looks fine and behaves strangely.

What the failure actually looks like

Owners almost never connect the two events, because the appliance still lights up. The 240-volt trap

There is a second, mechanically different failure worth knowing. Ovens, cooktops and ranges run their controls on 120 volts and their heating on 240. If a storm event costs you one leg of the double-pole supply — a half-tripped breaker, a loose lug, a damaged connection — the display, the clock and the lights all work while the appliance produces little or no heat.

Everything looks alive, so nobody suspects power, and a service call gets booked for an element that is perfectly healthy. Always check whether the breaker has tripped only partially before assuming the appliance has failed.

Tell the technician about the storm

This is the practical point of the whole article. If the appliance stopped working in the same week the power blinked, that single sentence changes the order of the diagnostic. It moves the board and the supply to the top and pushes water delivery, elements and mechanical parts down.

Point-of-use protection is possible for a plug-connected appliance and irrelevant for a hardwired one, which covers most built-in refrigeration, wall ovens and cooktops. Do not buy a plug-in strip and assume the kitchen is covered.

If a storm is coming and an appliance is mid-cycle, letting the cycle finish before the weather arrives is worth more than most people think. A steam oven or a coffee system interrupted at the wrong moment is exactly the scenario this article describes.

Thunderstorm days are the routine exposure.
