Measure it before you book
A thermometer on the centre rack turns an impression into a fault worth diagnosing.
A wall oven that will not come up to temperature has four candidate causes, and they are cheap to separate: the heat is not being made, the heat is being made and lost, the appliance is measuring wrongly, or half the supply is missing. Working through them in that order is what stops a control board being ordered for a fault that was never electronic.
“Runs cool” and “never heats” are different faults with different causes, and the display is not evidence either way. Put a standalone oven thermometer on the centre rack, set 350°F, and read it twenty minutes after the preheat tone. A spread of fifteen or twenty degrees is normal drift. A cavity sitting fifty or more degrees low, or one that climbs for a while and then stalls, is a real fault worth diagnosing.
Note how long preheat takes now against how long it used to take. On a double oven, run both cavities and compare. Two cool cavities point at the supply or the control. One cool cavity points at that cavity’s own element or sensor. That single comparison saves more diagnostic time than anything else you can do before the visit.
Three things decide cavity temperature: something producing heat, something measuring it, and something deciding when to stop.
An element that has opened is the simplest of the three. Sometimes there is a visible break or a blistered spot; often there is nothing to see at all and it has to be read electrically. A partially failed element does not exist — it is either passing current or it is not — so an oven that heats weakly rather than not at all is more often a sensor or control problem than an element problem.
The temperature sensor is a resistance probe reaching into the cavity, usually at the upper left. As it ages it can read high. The control then believes the oven is hotter than it is, cuts the element early, and you get a cavity that never reaches the number on the display. The complaint sounds like weak heat. The cause is bad measurement.
On the control side, the relay that switches the element carries real current every time the oven cycles, which on a busy kitchen is thousands of operations a year. A relay that no longer closes reliably produces intermittent heat that comes and goes with no pattern the owner can spot.
Hinge springs relax over years of use. A door that closes but no longer pulls square lets the cavity vent continuously, so the oven cycles constantly, the control panel above it runs hot, and the temperature never settles. Check whether the door sits flush at both top corners and whether the gasket is compressed flat anywhere along its run. This is common in kitchens where the oven has been in service since the house was built.
A wall oven runs its controls on 120 volts and its heating elements on 240. If one leg of the double-pole breaker is lost — a tripped half, a loose lug, a storm-damaged connection — the clock, the lights and the touch panel all work perfectly while the elements produce little or no heat. Everything looks alive, so nobody suspects power.

Stop and book immediately if the oven trips a breaker, if you hear arcing or smell hot insulation, or if the outer door glass is too hot to touch. A cool oven can wait for a scheduled appointment. Those three cannot.

Slow preheat that never quite got there. He replaced the element and it was better for a fortnight, then slipped back. The return visit found the relay at fault. It is fine now, but I paid for two appointments.
