Thermador built-in coffee machine will not draw water

The machine reports no water, or grinds and heats but never brews

Likely causes

  • Reservoir not seated far enough to open its valve
  • Float or level sensor stuck, so the tank reads empty when it is full
  • Air lock in the line after the tank was allowed to run dry
  • Water filter cartridge swollen or past its life and restricting flow
  • Brew unit jammed with compacted grounds and unable to complete its stroke
  • Pump running without building pressure

The local correction

Does the level drop?

If the water in the tank never moves, nothing downstream of it is worth opening.

A coffee system that will not draw water is a delivery fault until proved otherwise, and the delivery path is short: reservoir, valve, line, pump, brew unit, group. Every one of those can be assessed by watching the machine rather than by opening it, and the first observation eliminates most of the list.

Start at the tank

The reservoir has to be pushed home far enough to open a valve at the back of its housing. A tank sitting a few millimetres proud latches, looks seated, and delivers nothing. Pull it out, wipe the seat and the machine’s spigot, and push it back until it stops rather than until it feels right.

Then watch the level. Run a cycle and see whether the water in the tank actually drops. If it never moves, nothing downstream of the tank is worth investigating. If it drops but no coffee arrives, water is being taken and lost or blocked somewhere between the tank and the group.

A float or level sensor that has stuck will report an empty tank while you are looking at a full one. That is a five-second observation that immediately separates a sensing fault from a delivery fault.

Air locks and dry running

These pumps are not designed to lift air. If the tank was allowed to empty mid-brew, the line can hold an air lock that will not clear on its own. Filling the tank and running the hot-water or steam function — the path with the least restriction — is the standard way to purge it, and it works often enough to be worth trying before anyone is called.

The filter you forgot about

Many built-in coffee systems take a cartridge filter in the reservoir. Past its service life the medium swells and the flow through it falls away, which presents as weak pressure, short shots and eventually a machine that reports no water at all. Pull the cartridge out entirely and run the machine without it for one cycle. If flow returns, you have your answer and it costs the price of a cartridge.

Filters have a time life as well as a volume life, so they are replaced on the date rather than on how they look. A cartridge that has been in the tank for a year is past it whether or not the machine has been used.

The brew unit

Compacted grounds behind the brew unit will physically stop it completing its travel, and a unit that cannot reach its home position will refuse to admit water. If the machine is one with a removable brew group, take it out, rinse it under warm water with no detergent, let it drain, and refit it. If it will not come out, or will not go back in without force, stop — forcing it breaks the carrier.

When it is the pump

A pump that runs audibly but produces nothing, on a machine where the tank is seated, the sensor reads correctly, the filter is out and the brew unit is clean, is the remaining candidate. So is a thermal fuse that has opened after the machine ran restricted for a period, which produces a machine that grinds and does everything except deliver hot water.

What a cleaning cycle will and will not tell you

Run the machine’s own cleaning or descale routine when it asks for it. The counter behind that prompt is tracking volume and cycles, and ignoring it indefinitely gets you nowhere good.

What it is not is a diagnostic. If the pump is not moving water, that cycle circulates nothing for two hours and ends with the same machine and less of your afternoon. Establish that water moves before you treat the water path — the order matters more than either step on its own.

The same applies to the grinder side. A machine that grinds, tamps and heats normally while delivering nothing has already told you the fault is downstream of everything you can hear working, which is why the tank, the sensor and the filter come first and the pump comes last.

Stop using the machine and book if it trips a breaker, if there is water in the cabinet below it, or if the housing is hot to the touch after a failed cycle.
